A TOTAL of $23,860 was paid out by the Crime Stoppers National Board to informers between 2016 and 2017.

This was revealed by Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho.

According to a presentation by the board, 570 calls and reports were received by Crime Stoppers last year. Two-hundred-and-five crime information reports were received between January and December last year, which enabled police to make 197 arrests and eight were still pending.

A total of $6660 was paid out in 2016 to successful informers while another $17,200 was paid out last year.

The presentation by the board highlighted that 185 information reports were received of wanted persons, which resulted in 52 arrests and 133 pending.

One-hundred-and-eighty drug information reports were also received by Crime Stoppers last year, 56 of these information reports received led to successful arrests by police and 124 pending.

Meanwhile, Brig-Gen Qiliho also confirmed to this newspaper they were continuing investigations into some of Fiji's unsolved cases.

He said he extended the contract of a senior officer within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Fiji Police Force as investigations continued. Police earlier confirmed seeking the assistance of Interpol in dealing with these cases. Police seek information to assist them in making arrests in relation to the case of a Russian couple who were allegedly murdered and whose remains washed ashore at Natadola Beach, more than 32 kilometres from Sigatoka, in June 2016.

They were also appealing for public assistance in the alleged murder of a Chinese girl who was found unconscious inside her home in Samabula in September 2014 and the alleged murder of a company executive at Laucala Beach Estate, Nasinu, last year.
