444 sexual offences

A TOTAL of 444 separate counts of serious sexual offences were recorded in Fiji last year, statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed yesterday.

Of these offences, 300 were rape offences.

The report stated there were 227 people charged with 444 separate counts of serious sexual offences as of December 31 last year.

There were 24 people charged that were under the age of 18 years, with the youngest accused person charged with the rape of a 12-year-old boy.

Rape and sexual offences statistics also revealed that of the 444 separate counts of serious sexual offences recorded, seven were recorded for attempted rape, 10 offences of assault with intent to rape, six offences of abduction with intent to rape, 17 indecent assault offences, 23 defilement and 81 sexual assault offences.

There were 200 victims of the 444 separate sexual offences, of the 200, 130 victims were under the age of 18 years.

All accused persons charged with sexual offences were male, however, victims of the sexual offences were male and female — comprising 184 female victims and 16 male victims. The report also revealed there were 76 offences that occurred in domestic relationships or where the accused was known to the victim.

The ODPP's office had also recorded the two youngest victims of serious sexual offences last year, a one-year 10-month old and a one-year 11-month old toddler.

The accused persons were the father and the grandfather of the victims.
