THE Fijian Elections Office (FEO) will soon begin training sessions presiding officers and assistant presiding officers for the 2018 general election.

Acting director strategic development and communications Edwin Nand said FEO would train 4500 applicants as presiding officers and assistant presiding officers for this year's election day.

"While recruitment was ongoing, we had begun half-day training and from those trainings, we've identified individuals who qualified for training as presiding officers and assistant presiding officers," Mr Nand said. "Applicants were selected on merit after sitting for a test at the end of half-day training and these presiding officers will have a one-day training program from February 8 to March 3. Following the successful completion of the 2018 General Election election officials recruitment drive last month, we received 17,016 applications.

"We are targeting 25 participants for each training session and based on the number of polling stations, we would train the 4500 officials by March 3."

Mr Nand said this week would be the first training week for the new officials, which begins on Thursday.

"Appointment for presiding officers and assistant presiding officers will only be made at the end of the full one-day training based on their test results and their assessment," he said. "We are targeting 25 participants for each training session, and based on the number of polling stations, we will train 4500 presiding officers and assistant presiding officers by March 3. We expect to collectively train 625 officials this week alone and following the completion of training, the FEO will then issue contracts to election officials, presiding officers and assistant presiding officers from March 17 to March 24."
