Lautoka to receive new garbage truck

Monday, February 05, 2018

Update: 11:48AM THE Lautoka City Council (LCC) will today receive a five-tonne garbage truck worth US$84,337 (FJ$161,009) from the Japanese government.

A statement from the Japanese embassy in Suva said the council's current fleet had suffered considerable wear and tear because of the heavy demand for waste collection, with approximately 20 tonnes collected a day.

"The council resorted to hiring open trucks to ensure waste collection schedule is aptly covered. These open trucks pose occupational, health and safety risks to the garbage collectors and (members of) general public," the embassy stated.

"These open trucks make extra runs to the Vunato Disposal Site to discharge collected waste, which is inefficient and uneconomical for the council in the long run."

The project aims to improve LCC's waste management operations by providing an efficient, hazard-free and timely waste collection service to the people of Lautoka city.

Japan's assistance to LCC was possible through their Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.
