Police probe alleged rape

A nine-year-old who was allegedly raped by a 17-year-old male has been discharged from the Savusavu Hospital.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the alleged incident was reported to the Savusavu Police Station.

Ms Naisoro said the incident allegedly happened in a village last week.

"Police are continuing investigations into the incident," she said.

"We are concerned that there is another case being reported.

"Crimes against women and children are one of the main areas of focus this year and we are continuously addressing the issue through raising awareness

"Police are working with religious and other interest groups since this is a moral crime that needs to be addressed holistically."

In an earlier interview, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa said the care and safekeeping of children was the duty of every parent.
