Roadside littering

THE indiscriminate dumping of litter continues to be an issue at Tavakubu Back Rd in Lautoka.

The stretch of road which connects two heavily populated settlements in Lautoka City — Tomuka and Tavakubu — has been used as a dumping ground for decades.

Tavakubu Village headman Samuela Nakobakoba said nearby residents were frustrated with the amount of rubbish that was lying along the roadside.

"We have been asking the Lautoka City Council to include these areas into their collection program because a lot of people are dumping their rubbish anywhere," he said.

"It's a problem for us the landowners because this is our land they are dumping rubbish in.

"Some people come at night in their cars to dump their rubbish and we know that these are people from outside.

"If the rubbish trucks can service the Tavakubu Back Rd all the way to Tomuka then maybe we won't have this problem."

He said they had advised new tenants on their land to dispose rubbish properly.

Lautoka Rural Local Authority chairperson Faiaz Ali said they were aware of the littering problem in the area.

"It is a problem and we are trying our best to find the culprits and also get our residents to be more environmentally conscious," he said. People need to be educated about the importance of proper disposal of rubbish because it has a huge impact on a lot of different areas like the environment and health.

"We know there is an issue of dengue fever at the moment so we will be starting another aggressive awareness for our communities.

"Disposing of rubbish is one issue that continues to be a problem and we want to raise more awareness on this and about leaving rubbish in areas that could turn into breeding places for mosquitoes."

Mr Ali said the public awareness by the Lautoka Rural Local Authorities was set to begin next week.
