Beach turns into dumping ground

SAWENI Beach in Lautoka not only attracts beachgoers but a large amount of rubbish as well.

Residents are frustrated by the trash left behind by picnickers and people unceremoniously using the popular swimming spot as a dumping site.

New resident Anand Rajeev said he was astounded by the number of people who travelled to the area just to dump their rubbish.

"As you enter Saweni Rd, you will see these small piles of rubbish until you reach the beach where it's just everywhere," he said.

"A lot of people have tried to clean up this place but the dumping keeps happening."

He said littering was also common in Field 40, his former place of residence.

"There is a place in SM Koya Rd where people who own cars are coming to dump their rubbish.

"I have seen people dumping their dead dogs there because they are too lazy to bury their pet.

"These are educated people who should know better."

He said he transported his rubbish to his brother's home on collection days.

"We take ours to Field 40 on Wednesdays and Saturdays when they collect rubbish. There is no excuse for people to be dumping their rubbish so carelessly. They can always take it somewhere that has collection trucks coming."

Lautoka Rural Local Authority chairperson Faiaz Ali said the dumping of rubbish in Saweni and Lomolomo was an issue of concern.

"There needs to be more awareness on this," he said.

Meanwhile, Lautoka City Council CEO Jone Nakauvadra said rubbish collection by the council was only for communities within the town boundaries. He said people needed to look after their environment by dumping rubbish properly.
