Talks on coral reef threat

Simione Haravanua
Monday, February 05, 2018

THE threat to coral reefs in Fiji and the region by ecosystem pollution was discussed at a two-day symposium at the University of the South Pacific last week.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency-USP symposium brought participants from Fiji, Japan and other stakeholders to the talks.

The dean of the faculty of fisheries at Kagoshima University Professor Shunsuke Koshio reminded participants that the network they had formed over the two days would help them tackle the issue of marine ecosystem pollution in the South Pacific and Fiji.

"I think that this symposium is just a step to more collaboration and solving the problems that we face," said Prof Koshio.

He added that changes to JICA's policies would better serve Fijian students interested in the field of marine science studies.

"JICA has shifted from government to government and now will focus more on government to economic.

"That's a good news for us here in Fiji and students from the school of marine science."

USP deputy vice-chancellor Professor Derrick Armstrong thanked JICA and the Japanese Government for organising the symposium.
