Pacific, Fiji need Japan's help

FIJI and the Pacific need Japan's help to enhance its fisheries industry.

This was the message from Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau to participants at a recent symposium on the Future International Cooperation and Human Resource Development in Marine Science and Fisheries at the University of the South Pacific's Japan-Pacific ICT Centre, organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and USP.

He said the Fijian Government fully endorsed and supported the Pacific Island leaders' resolutions and agreement on the need to enhance fisheries-related assistance provided by the government of Japan.

"I would also emphasise that Fiji and other Pacific Island countries are in need of your continuous assistance which would enhance the long-term viability of Pacific island economies," said Mr Koroilavesau.

He said the objective of the symposium was to further enhance a partnership and provide network between the USP's School of Marine Studies and universities and research institutions in marine science and fisheries from Japan.

JICA resident representative Fiji office Yukari Ono said the ongoing partnership between Japan and USP had over the years proven beneficial to the Fijian people.

"I would like to emphasise that JICA has had a very good relationship and close co-operation with the USP School of Marine Studies for many years through JICA's technical co-operation activities such as dispatching Japanese experts and senior volunteers to the School of Marine Studies to support the school's various programs.

"Our co-operation also includes the implementation of a grassroots technical co-operation project on Gau Island by Mie University of Japan in collaboration with the School of Marine Studies."
