Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa handed over five sewing machines and a laptop to the women groups of Tikina Lovoni on Ovalau on Friday.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the assistance would provide opportunities and increase women's participation in economic activities within their communities.

She said the gift would also equip women with their skills and knowledge, economic independence and entrepreneurial empowerment.

She said the positive support of the men in their lives and the vanua was critical if women were to realise their full potential.

"The Government through the ministry has set aside programs to assist women groups around the country to engage in income-generating projects in order to help their communities," Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

"I encourage women groups to identify areas of need for the economic empowerment of their members and reach out to our offices around the country and ask for assistance."

President of the Lovoni women's group Kuini Veremaibau acknowledged the contribution by Government towards the group.

She said it would assist in the enhancement of their sewing and income generation skills of more than 200 members.

"Last year, nine women from the group participated in the National Women's Expo and the sewing machines will improve their sewing capacity to participate at that level again," Ms Veremaibau said.

President of the Nasaga women's group Fane Koyanasau said they usually came to Levuka Town to compile their group's monthly report and the laptop they received from the ministry would assist them in doing this.

A talanoa session was also held with the men and women of the three villages in Lovoni and the Nasaga women's group whereby government assistance programs towards families and communities were discussed.
