Positive bid

FIJI has a strong chance to host one of the tournaments of the annual HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series if the Fiji Rugby Union plays its cards right in the bidding process.

World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper said 19 countries were in the race with Fiji in the fight to win one of the few spots to host one of the tournaments.

"We always have a positive view of Fiji tendering, but we have not seen the bid yet. The world loves to watch Fiji play.

"The crowd is always important and has a great television viewing size as well. Our sponsors, we like them to be happy and I think they are getting themselves a strong chance in the tender."

Meanwhile, World Rugby competitions manager Mark Eagan, who visited Fiji last week, said work progress for the bid looked positive.

"I met the bid team at Fiji Rugby Union. We looked at the tender process and what is required to deliver and events like this is quite a heavy burden on the host country in terms of training facilities, players' welfare, medical facilities, the hospitality and the venues. We have big sponsors and we need to have the right facilities.

"It was very pleasing that they know well of what is required of the big project and they did a very, very strong bid and they understand that it is a very demanding event to organise.

"We have 19 countries who have extended interest. We have 10 slots and Fiji knows it is in competition and I was very pleased with the work and the professionalism of the bid team in the proposal by Fiji Rugby."

Star players in the series USA's Carlin Isles, England's Dan Norton, New Zealand's Luke Masirewa and South Africa's Seabelo Senatla agreed that Fiji should be allowed to host a tournament in the series.

Hamilton, meanwhile, is likely to host the New Zealand 7s next year, said Gosper.
