FIJI'S bid to host one of the tournaments in the annual HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series has been backed by some of the heavyweights of the series.

World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper and his competitions manager, Mark Eagen, indicated in Hamilton, New Zealand yesterday that there were positive signs favouring Fiji in the bidding process.

Fiji is among 19 countries gunning for one of the 10 spots available. One of the fastest legs in the series and world rugby, Carlin Isles, agreed that Fiji should be allowed to host since she was one of the top nations in the abbreviated rugby code.

"That will be great," he said.

"Fiji is a great country and they are the country of sevens.

"I played in the Oceania Sevens and taking the series there will be phenomenal. It is a beautiful country and everybody, and I mean everybody, is friendly. Fiji is a beautiful country, so why not take the series there."

Another fast pair of heels, South African Seabelo Senatla echoed similar sentiments.

"They should be given time and be allowed to host the tournament. Fiji is sevens rugby and I heard it is a beautiful country, so I think they should be given the right to host a tournament," he said.

England's Dan Norton said: "Why not? Fiji is the champion of sevens rugby and it is full of lovely people and a lovely place. It should be allowed to have one of the tournaments."

Former New Zealand 7s skipper and Chiefs player Liam Messam who is no stranger to Fiji, is also excited about returning for another Super Rugby match this year at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

He said Fiji had the right to host one of the tournaments in the series.

"I agree with Fiji hosting one of the tournaments. It will be exciting because the games there and the people are exciting. I cannot wait to go there again this year to play against the Highlanders."

Fiji Rugby Union is expected know the results of its bid in June.

"A rugby pitch is a rugby pitch, a crossover for US and Fiji will be very tough but we are ready.

"I know Fiji is fighting hard from last week and that will be very hard.

"Against Fiji you have to have a game plan and you have to play a game against Fiji so we just have to stick to our plans."
