Kiwis love Fiji

WHEN it comes to rugby, especially Fiji, some people can change allegiance to their country.

When the gates of the FMG Waikato Stadium opened yesterday, the sea of crowd spilt the support each fan had for his or her rugby team.

Among the thousands who spent a good part of yesterday morning waiting for the start of the inaugural Hamilton 7s was New Zealand couple, Alvin and Barbara Pennell.

They live in Hamilton.

"We will cheer Fiji because it is our country," Alvin said.

"We go to Fiji every year for holiday and we would love to live in Fiji. I first went to Fiji in 1983 and since then, to celebrate my birthday, we have never stopped going there. We love Fijians because they are the friendliest people on earth.

"That's why we are supporting them even though we are Kiwis," his wife added.

The couple was among thousands of fans who braved the morning rush to watch the tournament.
