Two boxers to fight

ONLY two amateur boxers will fly Fiji's flag at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held at Gold Coast, Australia in April.

Team Fiji chef de mission said the two boxers would be accompanied by the coach and the manager in the Commonwealth Games.

Team Fiji administrator Fesaitu Mario who is looking after the three sports which include boxing, athletics and women's rugby 7s said it was important what the boxers were eating and drinking.

"The main concern for the amateur boxing is the fuel for their boxers. You are only as good as the fuel which you take in and they are looking into what the athletes are taking and monitoring their nutrients which they are taking," he said.

"With water, the International World Doping Association is trying to keep tabs on what the athletes take in because at the end of the day the boxers are responsible for what they are taking into their body.

"It does not matter if it is given by someone else including the trainer or the coach. They are trying to educate the boxers to be mindful of what they take."

Mario said the athletes were fighting for their spot in the Commonwealth Games.
