Powell works on time

SPRINTER Aaron Powell is working hard to bring his time down to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Powell had been representing Fiji in international competitions with his last outing at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games where he won the race, but was later disqualified in a controversial decision by the officials.

The matter is still pending with the Pacific Games Council tribunal and the decision is expected to be made soon.

Powell clocked a time of 10.81 seconds in the 100 metres event at the Shop n Save-sponsored Athletics Fiji weekly competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

"It was a good run for me," Powell said.

"We had been doing some tough training in the past four weeks after coming back from the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.

"There are a few things which I am working on so that I can improve on my running and one of them is the finishing as it is very important part of the race."

Powell said only the best would get a chance to run in the Commonwealth Games.

"My goal is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, but I have to bring my time down in order to qualify," he said.

"The current qualifying time is 10.4 seconds and my timing in the race was 10.81 seconds so I have to work on that.

"I am confident to qualify for the Commonwealth Games."

The Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4-15.
