Road safety vital

POLICE are calling on parents to be extra vigilant with their children after the death of an eight-year-old boy in Tacirua, Nasinu, on Friday.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said parents and guardians had to be proactive in not only teaching children important road safety rules but also in leading by example.

She made the comment in a statement issued by police after primary school student Samuela Rokoua died after he allegedly crossed the road in front of a parked bus and was struck by a vehicle driven by a 40-year-old businessman.

He was rushed to the Valelevu Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Ms Naisoro said police were once again urging parents and guardians to continuously talk to their children about road safety.

"It's no longer enough to just simply be talking about it but we need to be showing them and leading by example," Ms Naisoro said.

She added motorists also had a role to play as road users.

She urged motorists to take all necessary precautions when passing a parked vehicle particularly when it was a bus.

"Drivers need to slow down and be alert to these situations because road safety and the safety of our children need to be addressed collectively," Ms Naisoro said.

Meanwhile, three lives have been claimed on our roads compared with seven for the same period last year.
