Kotobalavu: No words to explain how happy I am

SEKONAIA Kotobalavu was lost for words when he was handed keys to a one-bedroom wooden home yesterday.

Located in Kalabu, Nasinu, the $24,108 dwelling was gifted by the Viti Spinal Injuries Association.

Mr Kotobalavu had sought the assistance of the association after struggling with mobility in a lean-to which he shared with his parents at Wailea settlement in Vatuwaqa.

"Today is a joyful day for me," he said.

"To tell the truth, last night, I only slept for two hours because I was so excited about coming to my new house today.

"For years, I have been struggling and when I say years, I mean more than 10 years."

The house was constructed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces' engineers.

The design of the home allows easy movement around the house.

"Most of the time, I was rejected and being ignored by many people who made false promises. But today, in my new house there are no words to explain how happy I am."

Mr Kotobalavu sustained spinal injuries during a swimming incident in 2002 when he was a Form 6 student.

Adding to his misery, his right leg was amputated in 2008 because of a dislocated hip.

Kalabu landowners gave Mr Kotobalavu the piece of land where his house was built.
