Be alert and safe

EIGHT roads were closed in the Western Division yesterday as continuous downpours caused widespread flooding in low-lying areas across the country.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority, a few roads in Ba, Rakiraki and Tavua were affected by the heavy rain.

These included the Navala crossing in Ba, the Savusavu crossing, Burelevu crossing, Navuniyamunu crossing, Lau crossing and Nausori crossing in Ra and Balata Flat in Tavua and Rabulu Rd along the Kings highway in Tavua.

The Fiji Meteorological Services has forecasted more rain for today and tomorrow and the FRA advises members of the public to take extra precaution and not to drive into waters of unknown depth and current.

In Nasau, Ra, villager Meli Tokalau said the heavy downpour affected movement.

"People have been told not to cross the rivers or to move along the flooded water," he said.

Yesterday, reports of flooding were also experienced in Pacific Harbour and Sigatoka.

The weather office said a heavy rain warning remained in force for the group as an active trough of low pressure associated with cloud and rain had been slowly moving over the group.

A flood alert also remains in force for low-lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to major rivers.
