Check your tyre pressure

AIR compressors are available in most gas stations. Many are available free of charge. Correct tyre pressure is vital for safety, braking, grip and maximising the life of your tyres. Over inflation will not only give you a bumpy, uncomfortable ride, it'll reduce the surface area of tyre in contact with road which in turn reduces grip — especially dangerous in bad weather.

Too much air will also speed up tyre wear and make your tyres more susceptible to damage from impact. It's best to check your tyre pressure when the tyres are cold when the car has been stationary for a while, not straight after a drive, this is because you get a more accurate reading.

To adjust your tyre pressure, website www.edmunds.com reports below.

Adjust your tyre pressure

* Pull your car in close to the air compressor so the hose reaches all four tyres.

* Turn on the air compressor.

* Remove the stem caps and set them to the side or in a pocket.

nPress the hose fitting down on the valve stem and press the lever. You should feel air flowing through the hose and hear it inflating the tyre. This can take a little effort to hold the hose on the valve stem.

* Check to see when you have enough air pressure in the tyres by releasing the inflation lever. The gauge on the hose fitting will show if you have approximately enough air pressure. You can check it again later with your own gauge. At this point, it is better to slightly over inflate the tyre.

* Adjust the pressure in all the tyres in the same way.

* Recheck the tyre pressure with the digital gauge. If the pressure is too high, press the gauge down just far enough to release some air from the tyre. Check it again.

nReplace the valve caps on all the tyres
