STUDENTS of Fiji National University from the College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST) have been given the opportunity to participate in industrial practical attachment in specific areas of engineering works with the Housing Authority of Fiji.

This was made possible through the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the Fiji National University and Housing Authority of Fiji yesterday.

FNU vice-chancellor Professor Nigel Healey is confident about the partnership benefitting both parties.

Mr Healey said CEST had taken on the mission of inclusive industrial partnership to ensure workplace attachment for its students.

"The university's core business is to provide Fiji and the Pacific's human resource needs by delivering the highest quality and standards of teaching and training and this can only be achieved by ensuring that graduates have the right knowledge, skills, are creative, innovative and have the necessary attributes for life," he said.

"Under this agreement, the Housing Authority will station the students at various project sites and provide practical training by qualified and experienced trainers/supervisors. Upon completion of their attachment, the Housing Authority will issue a certificate of IA (Industrial Attachment) to all FNU students who have successfully completed the duration of their attachment.

The HA will undertake screening and selection process before students commence internship.

Housing Authority executive board member Nesbitt Hazelman said the agreement would enable the authority to better execute its role in the housing projects they would soon embark on.

"The authority as yet does not have the required manpower to service all its projects especially as projects are starting simultaneously," Mr Hazelman said.
