'Littering unacceptable'

PEOPLE need to call out for this kind of behaviour, it is unacceptable.

These were the words of acting permanent secretary for Ministry of Forests Bernadette Welch.

Ms Welch urged the public to report those found littering in public places.

Her comments came after the Forests and Fisheries ministries and members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces worked three consecutive Wednesdays cleaning up along the Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve.

"It is unacceptable that people throw rubbish in the forest reserves destroying this beautiful forest," Ms Welch said.

She said any Fijian still denying that climate change was not real was not being realistic hence the need to work with Government to support its commitments in accelerating climate change action plans which includes keeping our surrounding clean.

"My message to the public is we all know and accept that climate change is real and we have also seen the leadership role that this Government and the Prime Minister has taken globally in relation to COP23 and Fiji is committed to being a leader both in a region and globally punching way above its weight.

"And part of that leadership is demonstrated right here in our own back yards that we're willing to take action because we are trying to influence the big polluters to take action."

She said if Fijians took action now by keeping their environment rubbish-free then we had the authority to speak up to global polluters.

"It actually requires the commitment of every single Fijian not just members of the Government, or the forestry and the military who come to do this, but every individual has to be committed to that," she said.
