Walesi for villages

TWO more villages in the Western Division now have access to the Walesi digital television platform, which was launched by Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on Thursday.

Villagers from Drauniivi in Ra and Rabulu in Tavua now have access to eight free-to-air channels through the Walesi platform.

During the launch, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the core reason of the initiative was to bring free television to the people.

Drauniivi Village headman Sakaraia Wadroi said: "Most people don't have money for other channels and this is a good way to keep everyone informed too." The village is home to more than 1000 people.

Rabulu Village headman Esa Navuase said the 354 people in his village were happy to receive free TV access.

Meanwhile, people earning below $30,000 can apply to get a free set top box for the Walesi digital free-to-air television platform, said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

Speaking to villagers in Tavua on Thursday, he said they made a submission as Government and decided people who earned a particular level should get the set top box for free.

"At the moment, we pay electricity and water subsidies for those who are earning less than $30,000 and it is the same way with this box," he said.

We have the forms and if you earn less than $30,000 a year, you can fill the form and leave it with the district officer and the team will come around, all you need to do is buy your own television set."
