POLICE deployed a team last night to the province of Bua after receiving increasing reports of yaqona theft.

The initiative by police comes in the wake of increasing reports of yaqona thefts in the North.

The Fiji Times team joined the police last night in Wainunu after kava farmers contacted this newspaper to express their frustrations over the increasing yaqona theft.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that reports of yaqona theft had been lodged with police.

"A team of investigators will spend the night in the village to conduct investigations and the alleged suspects are known," she said.

Early this week, Ms Naisoro confirmed increasing reports of yaqona theft in the province of Cakaudrove. She said police arrested a suspect, who was questioned at the Tukavesi Police Station.

Wainunu district advisory councillor William Brown said the situation had deteriorated in the district.

"Farmers are suffering now at the hands of thieves and we need something done about this," he said. "So we are working closely with police to combat this issue."
