Rain 'good for growers'

THE heavy rain forecast for the country will be good for sugarcane farmers, says National Farmers Union president Surendra Lal.

He said the dry season since October last year had an impact on sugarcane farms.

"This is good news for farmers because we all need the rain for our dried farms and some farmers have started to feel the pinch of the dry spell that affected us towards late last year," Mr Lal said.

"The wet season and days of rain forecast for the country, including the North, is a relief for us farmers. We need this wet weather and it will certainly help our crops."

However, Mr Lal said, farmers should closely monitor farms during the predicted six days of heavy downpour expected for the country.

On a plan to bring foreign labourers for cane farms, Mr Lal said members asked for a clearer picture.

"We believe the resources used to bring them in could still be used for local workers," he said.

"This will help solve the problem of cane labourers we have faced for quite a long time as the matter is bwetween the cutters and famers."
