System to fuel heavy rain, wind

A WEAK trough of low pressure to the west of Fiji is expected to gradually move over the group and intensify into a tropical disturbance over Fiji waters, says Fiji Meteorology Service director Ravind Kumar.

He says the system is expected to migrate south-eastwards towards Tonga this weekend.

"However, the associated cloud, rain with possibly strong and gusty wind is likely to affect the northern and eastern parts of the country from later tomorrow (today) night," he said.

A heavy rain warning is in force for Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, western, northern and eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti groups. A strong wind warning is also in force for Rotuma.

A heavy rain warning previously in force for southern Viti Levu has been downgraded to heavy rain alert and now includes Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

"Occasional rain, heavy at times and a few thunderstorms is expected over Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, western, northern and eastern Viti Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, with rain becoming frequent and heavy at times from tonight (yesterday).

"Wind over land are expected to gradually increase from moderate to fresh and become strong and gusty at times over the northern and eastern parts of the country from Sunday. Over Rotuma land areas, expect strong wind with average speed of 45 kilometre per hour and gusting to 60km per hour."

The rest of the country can expect occasional showers and thunderstorms expected to become frequent and heavy from today.

"The accumulation of rainfall over the past few days has saturated the ground and with forecast of rainy conditions to continue in most parts of the country, the risk of flash flooding, flooding of low-lying and catchment level remains high.

"The weather conditions will be closely monitored and public will be appropriately advised through alert and warning as the situation worsens."

Communities have been advised to remain prepared and take weather alerts and warnings seriously.
