French naval ship restocks supplies

FRENCH naval ship La Moqueuse is in the country after three weeks of surveillance of exclusive economic zones in New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna.

The ship berthed at the Kings Wharf in Suva early yesterday morning to refuel and restock before it returns to its base in Noumea, New Caledonia.

While this is not the ship's first visit to Suva, it is so for its captain Lieutenant Commander Youn Jese-Maria.

La Moqueuse was involved in transporting food and aid to islands struck by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.

Lt-Cmdr Jese-Maria said Fiji and France shared close relations with military officers, and that New Caledonia would be hosting Fiji soldiers later in the year.

French deputy ambassador Jean-Louis Roth said Fiji and France have had a long history in terms of military relations.

Alliance Francaise director Thomas Feldstein said they have had at least 15-20 Fiji military officers who have learnt French at the centre.

"Learning French is very useful and in particular for soldiers they can use this for international jobs, such as with the United Nations," Mr Feldstein said.

La Moqueuse returns home on Monday.
