Rally behind the team

Maikeli Seru In Hamilton, New Zealand
Friday, February 02, 2018

A FORMER Fijian academia, who now teaches and drives taxi part-time in Hamilton, New Zealand, has called on Fijians all over the world to unite for rugby and cast aside racial differences.

Abdul Rauf, a former Suva Grammar School teacher, who is originally from Cuvu, Nadroga, made the call on Wednesday while watching the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team training in Hamilton for this weekend's inaugural tourney. "This rugby 7s team has brought everybody together and we are known through sevens," he said.

"Kaiviti in New Zealand are all known as Fijians. Why don't we unite and put away our racial differences and come together as a family to support our team.

"We are reading of people criticising this team and we are sad to note and hear that we are still divided. This is not the time to have differences, let's unite, let's show our support by getting together as Fijians and cheer this team on."

Rauf said his family would watch the tournament to support the national side. He joined a big group of Fijians who welcomed the team at training on Wednesday. The tournament starts tomorrow.
