League to start season

FIJI National Rugby League (FNRL) will host a 9s tournament at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka next Saturday.

This event will kick- start the 2018 league season in Fiji.

Timoci Naleba, the FNRL chief executive officer said the tournament was a vital part of their plan and they would be going a step further during the event by offering workshops and consultations to help teams achieve higher standards.

"This is the first event we are organising to take us through the next four years. Having this 9s tournament is very important for all clubs. Normally our boys are led to believe that participating in a competition will make them fitter, which is not the case because once you participate, that is when you drain everything out," he said.

"What we want to build on to our players is the thinking, mind-set that the competition is not for them to only win a game but for them to learn. We are organising the 9s along with some workshops, with one on one consultation with fitness people that they will be there, they can learn more and help them through the year."

As many as 24 teams are being eyed to be part of the 9s tournament.

The winner will walk away with $3000, runner-up $1500, losing semi-finalists $1000 and losing quarter-finalists $500.
