Beach volleyball receives boost

FIJI Beach Volleyball players will be able to train on a proper and better court ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games that will be held in April in Gold Coast, Australia.

The two acres of land at Waitavu Estate, Pacific Harbour was given by Llew and Jo Boddam-Whetham who are good friends with national coach Todd Edwards and national team manager Alex Todd.

"They donated the big piece of land, for four years, to the beach volleyball to use in any way we need and we will be able to put four courts on it including toilet facilities, secured lock area, office and hopefully, if we are able to get the funding, we will put up the accommodation and conference centre," Todd said.

"We should be able to host world-class competitions.

"We will be working on the sand to ensure there is nothing underneath the sand as it is a beautiful deep sand."

Fiji men's and women's volleyball team qualified for the Commonwealth Games after winning the qualifiers in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games which was held at Port Vila, Vanuatu.

"To play beach volleyball in any competition, you need to have 40 centimetres deep sand and currently the court on which they are training on had five centimetres deep sand so it is creating a lot of injuries," she said.

"We needed a proper court and the court which we got in Pacific Harbour is very good and it is also a big boost for the players ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"It is basically two acres of land and when Todd was first coaching Fiji in the 1990s and he got permission to use a piece of land and we did not take it or own it. He used the land to coach the team which won the gold medal in the Oceania and South Pacific Games. He took up the coaching again last year and they asked Todd if he would like to use the court to train the players and Todd took the land," the manager said.
