16 rape cases among January sex statistics

FIVE men were charged for allegedly raping a 50-year-old woman during a home invasion last month.

This was revealed in the rape and sexual offences statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions yesterday.

According to the ODPP, the five accused persons have also been charged with aggravated robbery over the alleged offence.

Twenty-two people were charged in relation to 24 separate incidents last month, 16 of which were rape cases, five sexual assault cases and one each for abduction with intent to have carnal knowledge, indecent assault and defilement.

The statistics also revealed that two men aged 36 and 46 years were charged for allegedly raping their wives, while a juvenile was charged for raping a 13-year-old girl from his village.

There was an incident where a 36-year-old man allegedly raped his sister, 26, after a drinking party.

A 20-year-old man was also charged for allegedly raping his 13-year-old cousin.

A 24-year-old man was charged for the alleged rape of another 24-year-old man after returning from a nightclub

In another incident, a 54-year-old grandfather was charged with the alleged rape and sexual assault of his six-year-old granddaughter while they were alone at home.

A 60-year-old uncle was also charged for the alleged sexual assault and indecent assault of his eight-year-old niece.

The ODPP statistics highlighted that seven incidents of rape involved victims who were related to the accused persons.
