Health lacks medics

WITH the arrival of 30 new hospital ambulances from China, Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Alex O'Connor confirmed there are no trained paramedics in the Health Ministry.

He said the ministry had instead worked to ensure that nursing students undergo emergency medical training.

"We can expect to have dispatch nurses who will be going with the ambulances on the out-calls to have them trained in medical emergency treatment, then gradually we will move them to what we call the paramedic training, which can be anything from six to eight months before they are certified," Mr O'Connor said.

"We don't have any paramedics, the only paramedics that we had are now at Helipro."

Mr O'Connor said the new ambulances would be based in rural and maritime areas.

"There are basic equipment in these new ambulances that have arrived and on my visual inspection two days ago, they have to be equipped with defibrillators, oxygen facilities and all that."
