Tarseal plan awaits priorities

THERE are no plans to tarseal the Buca Bay highway from Kasavu where the tarsealed road from Savusavu Town ends.

Fiji Roads Authority general manager network operations and maintenance Aram Goes said this would not happen yet because the traffic volume along this highway was low, compared with other priority projects around the country.

"The immediate one to two-year program with traffic volumes and demand use is low out in these areas, compared with existing priority projects," he said.

The project, Mr Goes said, included upgrading works along the Nabouwalu to Kubalau Rd, which leads to Wailevu West Coast.

"This is 32 kilometres upgrade plus 6km of seal at various seal locations," he said.

"However, in the longer term, the FRA is seeking to develop road network resilience plans for alternative access from Labasa to Savusavu and other key routes across Fiji."

The 30-kilometre tarsealed road from Nagigi to Kasavu has benefited many farmers and villagers who commute through the highway daily.

Passengers travelling through this highway from Taveuni now get to Labasa at midday compared with the afternoon hours of 4pm when the Taveuni bus arrives. The one-hour drive from Savusavu Town to Viani Village now only takes 20 minutes.

Cakaudrove Provincial chairman Filise Vuki has always described this development as of great benefit to the people of the province.
