Facilities neglected, says Akbar

WE need to take ownership of our health facilities and maintain cleanliness, says Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar.

She said rural facilities in particular had been neglected for quite a long time and the ministry needed to act now to ensure that health services were enhanced.

"In terms of outsourcing some of the services, we need to strongly negotiate the terms and conditions of the agreement to ensure it is aligned with the core values and principles of customer care and excellence in service delivery," said Ms Akbar.

"We need to cultivate friendly, professional attitudes among healthcare providers and we need to instil a sense of compassion and empathy for those in our society who suffer from the effects of ill-health."

Ms Akbar reminded the senior management present at the meeting of the impact they had on the lives of Fijians.

"We can surely make an impact on those we serve if we set our mind to it. Each of you here today are supervisors or heads of division and have employees who are under your care or supervision, therein you are at a decision making level and the decisions you make as leaders will have a profound impact on lives of the Fijian families and the future of this nation," she said.

She added these values and cleanliness started from all departments and divisions.

"Let's begin within our departments or divisions, let's inculcate the core values of respect and unity, let's make the change first within and I can guarantee you that same act of kindness will overflow to those that we serve," she said.
