Injured duo return home

Maikeli Seru In Hamilton, New Zealand

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s reps Waisea Nacuqu and Apete Daveta returned home last night and will not play in the inaugural Hamilton 7s in New Zealand this weekend.

They were injured from the Sydney 7s in Australia last weekend.

"Waisea Nacuqu had a knee injury and Daveta twisted his ankle," Baber said after the team trained at the Marist Rugby Club grounds in Hamilton yesterday.

While replacements will leave Nadi this morning to join the team a day from kick-off, Baber said the competition among teams in the World Rugby Sevens Series was tough.

This is true when Australia dethroned Sydney 7s champion and series leader South Africa while top teams such as Fiji, New Zealand, England and Samoa fell short in the battle to the cup winner in Australia.

"This is a harsh environment because it goes from week to week and we are trying to get them up in fitness and healthy before we get into the tournament again."

The team hit the gym and had two training sessions yesterday.

"It is important that they get back from recovery."

Baber said the downfall in Sydney was the inability to win and keep possession.

"New Zealand handed to us in Sydney what we always do. I am hurting and the players are hurting. It is important that we perform and we know the importance of the responsibility that we have.

"Our strategies at the kick-off was to return and we are working on that. Against USA, they took control and also controlled possession which did not make us play our game. And against New Zealand when they kicked deep, we gave them the ball. We got to be better. It is always rivalry when we are against New Zealand and the boys know that and we got to work hard and do the job.

"We have Australia and Spain in the pools and last week Australia got better when they went on. We have to make sure that we use what we worked and trained on because it is another day and another challenge."
