Rinakama: Maintain possession, cut out mistakes

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s team need to make use of their lanky players to win possession says rugby pundit Reverend Joji Rinakama after the side's poor performance in the Sydney 7s last weekend.

Rinakama was the assistant coach of the Flying Fijians when they reached the quarter-final against South Africa in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.

The former Naitasiri mentor analysed the performance of the team and he was optimistic the team will defy all odds to bounce back in New Zealand.

"Most of us in Fiji want the players to win and if you see Australia has improved and they defeated South Africa in the final and they did not allow them to score any points. The teams have been having thorough preparation," he said.

"The team played very well during the pool matches to beat Samoa, Russia, and New Zealand and for a few of the players it was their first tournament and we have to give them time. They need more game time especially in the 7s code of rugby. Fiji had a very good defensive structure during the pool matches.

"I also believe fatigue took its toll on the players and fatigue is one thing which can spoil many things and I think the coaches and the trainers are very experienced and I believe they know what they need to do to control fatigue."

Rinakama said he was impressed with Eroni Sau and had shown a lot of potentials.

"The team has to make use of all the opportunities to score points and retaining the ball from the kick-offs and maintaining possession is very important and these are the areas where the South Africans dominate.

"The players have the height in the team and they need to make sure they win the ball from the kick-offs and contest the ball in every facet of the game since they got very little time in 7s. The players need to cut out the careless mistakes like knock ons and losing possessions.

Fiji is pooled with Australia, Wales, and Spain in Pool A of the Hamilton 7s this weekend.
