FIJI's top weight-lifters are attending an intense training camp in Noumea, New Caledonia to prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia in April.

The weight-lifters Apolonia Vaivai, Manueli Tulo, Poama Qaqa and Taniela Rainibogi are joined by Eileen Cikamatana, who had been training at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute after the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in December last year.

"They are among 42 Vanuatu Pacific Mini Games gold medallists who are in a special training camp at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in Mont Dore, New Caledonia," the press release read.

"Our athletes will train with 20 institute lifters plus the top lifters of Samoa, Fiji and New Zealand for an eight-day period in order to finetune their preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

"The lifters taking part in this elite training camp at the institute, quite a number of them are ranked first and second in the Commonwealth Games, with some of them trying to win back to back gold medals in Gold Coast."

The training camp was financially supported by the International Weightlifting Federation while the Fijian weight-lifters were supported by the Fiji National Sports Commission.

"Apart from Paul Coffa who coaches the 20 resident lifters of the institute, three of the leading coaches of the region, Jerry Wallwork from Samoa, Joe Vueti from Fiji and Tina Ball from New Zealand are in Noumea coaching their own athletes who have qualified for the Games," the statement further read."
