Ministry seeks clarity

THE Ministry of Fisheries has requested the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the University of the South Pacific to inform them on what role it can play in their partnership.

This was highlighted at the closing of the two-day Symposium on Future International Co-operation and Human Resource Development in Marine Science and Fisheries at the USP's Japan-Pacific ICT Centre on Tuesday.

"What is Government's role in this collaboration and where do you want us to come in?" Fisheries Ministry principal officer Mere Lakeba asked JICA and USP officials.

"I was particularly struck by some comment on the wide knowledge that we have been working on the discipline that we are specialised in."

Ms Lakeba said even though the knowledge was expanding, Government could assist in terms of implementation.

The ministry requested that it be given a chance to make presentations on local issues during future symposiums.

"In future symposiums, if government ministries like ours can be given the opportunity to present the industry needs and what exactly government officials face," she said.

"There is a gap that students have when they leave the institution and come into the workplace, with the fact they need to have experience hands on."

Meanwhile, JICA resident representative Yukari Ono said some of the issues raised by the ministry were important and that it stamped its mark on the partnership they had.

"Government has indeed an important role," she said.

"If the relevant ministry has collaboration with USP and FNU (Fiji National University), we will try and prioritise the request made by both parties," said Ms Ono.
