Let's give it our best shot

National sevens rugby coach Gareth Baber has made it clear he is committed to staying with the team.

Understandably our losses in the World Rugby Sevens Circuit have raised the ire of vocal Fijian fans who have vented their frustration through various mediums available to them.

Our thumping at the hands of the US side and embarrassment at the hands of the New Zealand side in the final of the play-off for fourth/fifth spot in Sydney at the weekend are best forgotten now.

We have a massive challenge before us this weekend when we run on for the inaugural Hamilton 7s in New Zealand.

Nothing's going to come easy for us, now that the rest of the field reckon they know what it takes to defeat us.

Baber said he was determined to continue.

"In every job you will have critics," he said after the team's morning training session at the Marist Rugby Club grounds in Hamilton yesterday.

"There is a job to do and I understand the responsibility. We are working our socks up and we are not taking anything for granted. I am hurting and the boys are hurting. I am going to continue on because I have a job to do."

Yesterday fans turned up to watch the team's training sessions in Hamilton.

Baber appeared to focus on our weaknesses in Sydney.

He touched on our kick-offs and our defence.

It is difficult trying to regain a footing at this level when you are down from the previous weekend.

But surely fans know what Fiji is capable of.

They know what Fijians can sometimes do on the sevens rugby field when we are staring at a blank wall.

Hamilton Fijian community president Ravulolo Tagivetaua yesterday reassured the team of the support of Fijians in New Zealand.

There can be no doubts about the support base for our team anywhere in the world where Fijians live.

"We told them 'we support you whether you lose or win. Whatever your result, remember that we are your family because we are all Fijians'," the team was told by Mr Tagivetaua.

For now, the challenge is on us as fans of the national side to allow the team to prepare well for the Hamilton 7s.

They need our support. It is difficult to get over the Sydney embarrassment, but it is important that we show the team our support this weekend.

They must prepare well for a tough weekend.

The least we should expect from our team is that they give Hamilton their best shot.

Go Fiji, go.
