Police to up its game

THE Fiji Police Force needs to up its game, with Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho saying the increase in aggravated robberies and burglary last year continued to hurt Fijians.

Police recorded a 14 per cent increase in aggravated robberies last year, recording 500 compared with 440 cases in 2016.

Police also recorded a 31 per cent increase in drug cases last year, recording a total of 524 cases compared with 686 in 2017.

But for overall serious offences, police recorded a 3 per cent decrease compared with the previous year.

"This is one of the areas that continue to increase and we are working hard on that," he said.

"One of the things that I have given directive on is that we need to work hard on our detection rates on those particular cases, that way we can get successful prosecutions and get these people off the streets.

"The nature of the way things are, it will be one or a group of people involving themselves in a series of these types of robberies or home invasions and burglaries rather than doing just one."

Brig-Gen Qiliho said police needed to up its game, specifically in increasing their detection rate to reduce these criminal activities.

"In fact, that is one of the areas that I know is hurting the population most — when the sanctity of the home is violated as such when people break into that secure environment of the home."

"That is one of the areas that we will be working hard on," he said.

The police chief also said the issue of drugs continued to be one of their main focus, with a number of operations to be undertaken this year.
