Police warn public

Luisa Qiolevu
Thursday, February 01, 2018

POLICE have issued a stern warning to the public to be mindful of the rainy weather expected to hit the country today.

More rain is expected today until midnight as a trough of low pressure remains slow moving over Yasawa, Mamanuca, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau and the Lomaiviti Group.

The latest weather bulletin issued from the national weather forecasting centre in Nadi yesterday reported associated cloud and rain would affect the country.

Police acting chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Maretino Qiolevu said the safety of children should always be paramount during periods of adverse weather.

"It is vital for parents and guardians to know of their children's activities and whereabouts at all times," he said.

ACP Qiolevu added that despite advisories and warnings, children were still found swimming in flooded areas.

"If we are to prevent loss of life or injury, then as adults we need to stop this from happening," he said.

Police also stressed the importance of driving safely during wet weather.

"Motorists and pedestrians alike are to be mindful of their safety on the road because the heavy downpour could be a concern for everyone," ACP Qiolevu said.
