Ship aground near Vanuabalavu

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Update: 3:36PM A LOCAL fishing boat, part of a fleet of a local fishing company, ran aground on a reef inside Lomaloma Bay in Vanuabalavu yesterday afternoon.

The MV Solander XI was sitting high and dry on the reef when construction company Pacific Building Solutions, which has a construction site on the shore some 200 metres from the reef, sent a team to investigate.

PBS Community Relations Coordinator Atelaite Cama said the crew was in good spirits this morning.

"Local fishing vessel MV Solander has run aground on a reef patch within the bay in Lomaloma, Vanuabalavu, Northern Lau," Ms Cama said.

"It's not clear how many of them are there altogether but there were two on board, a captain, and crew when we visited this morning."

The PBS staff said the crew was on board with catches meant for export, which would be offloaded onto another Solander vessel currently making its way to Vanuabalavu.

PBS is currently completing reconstruction works post-TC Winston in Vanuabalavu.
