THE Fiji Airways Fiji 7s have kicked off its preparations as the team looked for an improved performance during the inaugural Hamilton Sevens this weekend.

The team arrived in Hamilton from Sydney and coach Gareth Baber knows his team has a big mountain to climb after a their loss in the cup quarter-final at the Allianz Stadium last weekend.

The former Hong Kong 7s team coach said they would to need lift their game after the Sydney campaign.

After three powerful performance on the opening day of the Sydney Sevens, the Jerry Tuwai-captained side was outplayed by USA in the cup quarter-final.

After beating Kenya in the fifth place semi-final, the side faced arch rivals New Zealand in the final but were dominated by the Kiwis.

Defending champion South Africa leads with 58 points after scoring 22 points in Dubai, 17 in Cape Town and 19 in Sydney.

Fiji has a tough pool in Hamilton which is the new host of a tournament in the series.

Baber's men will face Sydney champions Australia, Wales and Spain. Hosts NZ has France and Scotland in Hamilton.

Samoa under Sir Gordon Tietjens plays Kenya in the first match on Saturday.

Hamilton Sevens pools:

Pool A: Australia, Fiji, Wales, Spain.

Pool B: South Africa, England, Russia, TBA.

Pool C: New Zealand, Argentina, France, Scotland.

Pool D: USA, Kenya, Samoa, Canada.
