THE Suva Marathon Club members see themselves as part of the bigger battle against non-communicable diseases helping everybody to live a healthy life.

Club secretary Marita Manley said their aim at the club was to stage a world-class event that attracts runners from around Fiji and around the world.

"The support from Tourism Fiji will help bring in new International runners and even before registrations were officially open the new Japan flight has seen a number of runners taking advantage of this and register for July 2018," she said.

"For all our runners in Suva our regular Thursday club runs and our first Saturday of the month social runs and the Munro Leys Suva challenge are a great way to gradually work your way up to a longer distance at the Island Chill Suva Marathon.

"Get out there and live healthy and active lifestyle and we're here to provide a platform for runners to train together throughout the year."

Manley stated that a series of runs leading up to the main event will be held on the first Saturday of every month.

"I am also delighted that Island Chill is also supporting those number of build-up runs with prizes in the hope that we get as many people out there as possible on our first Saturday of the month.

"These are social runs and they bring a lot of people together so whether you are training to represent Fiji in the Commonwealth Games or whether you've never run before, please do come down and join us because we are a really friendly group of people and all the club members help to motivate each other to get to that next goal."

The Suva Marathon course is an IAAF-AIMS certified course and listed as a qualifying race for the Olympic Games, World Championships and the Boston Marathon.

The event last year saw more than 1300 runners from all walks of life taking part.
