THE ANZ Bank says it is committed to investing in communities and building prosperity, including through staff volunteering.

ANZ Fiji country head Saud Minam made the comment while speaking at an event to acknowledge the contribution of individuals and organisations to the Christmas Carols in Koro Island initiative organised by Reach 4 Your Future Foundation (R4YFF) in Suva on Monday. Mr Minam said the bank liked to give back to the communities they operated in and to reach out to the people.

He said ANZ staff volunteers packed 800 backpacks with stationery for schoolchildren on Koro, clocking more than 300 volunteer hours last month.

"Our staff have access to one paid volunteer leave every day and we encourage them all to donate their skills and time to community causes either as an individual or as part of a team," Mr Minam said.

The initiative helped provide children on the cyclone-impacted island with back to school essential.

ANZ Fiji, the Staff Foundation, ANZ Pacific Operations Staff Foundation and Fiji Broadcasting Corporation were acknowledged for their contributions towards the initiative and presented the Best Community Award by Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou.

ANZ Fiji accountant Salestino Bau was presented with a Civic Leadership Award for showing leadership while delivering the program.

R4YFF president Ganesh Sen said 800 schoolchildren from Australia were engaged in the program with 800 personalised crafted arts also sent to Koro.

Mr Tuitubou thanked all the stakeholders involved in getting the program delivered to the island.

This year's Christmas Carol program will be held on Vanuabalavu and launched in July.
