THE University of the South Pacific has commemorated its 50th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the USP School of Marine Studies.

The commemoration was marked by a symposium organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

JICA resident representative Yukari Ono congratulated USP on the milestone achievement.

"On behalf of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), I sincerely congratulate USP on its 50th anniversary this year, and I am very glad to participate in and witness the USP's celebration through the organisation of this two-day symposium as one of the first official functions in the year of 50th anniversary. Congratulations to USP, its member countries and its staff for reaching this milestone," she said.

"While celebrating the USP's 50th anniversary this year, we must not forget to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the USP School of Marine Studies buildings and other buildings at lower campus established in 1998, which were constructed under Japan's Official Development Assistance.

"I am very glad to see that those facilities and equipment have been fully utilised."
