Salacakau: Students need entrepreneurship training

MARIST Brothers High School (MBHS) principal Ben Salacakau says they are thinking of teaching students entrepreneurship as an internal extra activity for the school.

"We are trying to work out how we are going to manage that, but if on a day we might need students to come and sell something; teach them to raise money and make money and save it," he said.

Mr Salacakau made the comments after the 2018 RBF Student Diary, which promoted financial literacy, was launched by the Ministry of Education deputy secretary primary and secondary education, Timoci Bure, yesterday at the school.

"So maybe in the future we will be directing students towards job creation rather than job seeking. In a small way we can make some progress there," Mr Salacakau said.

He said they could teach students about creating something when they left school and growing it from there.

"A lot of students will end up with blue collar jobs and it's easy to channel their skills into self-employment."

He said this was something we really needed to teach our students because financial education was very important, particularly being money-wise.

"The idea is pretty much internal right now; we will work with what is available to us in terms of timetabling which will need some organisation. It won't be an examinable issue but it will just be an extra activity run by the school," he said.

"Much of the diary is aligned towards our financial education curriculum in schools.

"It teaches students how to save; that's why every student now in Year 9 and 10 must have a savings account."
