Radrodro questions legal powers

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Update: 3:46PM THE Ministry of Local Government was today questioned by Public Accounts Committee (PAC) member Aseri Radrodro on what legal powers did the Department of Local Government (DLG) have to monitor municipal councils.

"The OAG (auditor-general) highlighted the absence of power in the DLG as the act allows only the Minister to monitor municipal councils; will the review of the act empower the DLG?" he asked.

Mr Radrodro also asked if the review of the act would also empower the director to which PS local government Joshua Wycliffe said, the director local government who did the work, was at present empowered under the terms of reference (TOR) of his position.

PAC chairman Asneel Sudhakar at this point commented that the review of the legislation would give the director more powers.

Director local government Azam Khan added that the strengthening the Department of Local Government is also one of the priorities.

The Ministry of Local Government was making submissions on the Monitoring of Municipal Councils by Department of Local Government to the PAC.
