SIXTEEN rugby teams from Naitasiri participated in the Vodafone-sponsored Vunidawa Zone 10s competition which kicked off at Lutu District School's Serevi Park on Saturday.

This was part of the Naitasiri Rugby Union's and Naitasiri Provincial Council's plan to revive club rugby in the province.

Tournament director Semi Tekivili says the revitalisation of club rugby comes in wake of exploring untapped talents in the highlands and keeping youths occupied in sports.

"This also is a need to provide opportunity for players in the province to be part of the bigger Naitasiri Rugby team handpicked from club competition," he said.

"We are looking forward to three more zone competition that will be held in the upcoming weeks. Waidina, Wainimala will kick off their club competition this weekend.

"The Naitasiri Rugby Union will hold trials to handpick players from club competition to be part of the extended squad for the Skipper Cup and Farebrother competitions."

New winners Rara toppled Senikau Lutu 7-5 in a close match.

The next competition, the Vodafone Waidina 10s will be held on February 3.
