Planned water closure

A TEAM from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is conducting awareness meetings in areas that will be affected by the planned Nagado water shutdown from February 3-6.

WAF general manager customer service Sekove Uluinayau said the objective of this exercise was to increase awareness and encourage households in Nadi and Lautoka to start storing water and conserve it for the shutdown period.

"Our officers are on the ground to provide advice and inform members of the public in Nadi and Lautoka about the upcoming Nagado water shutdown. Teams are going around communities and villages handing out flyers to all customers and we are working closely with the district advisory councils and village headmen to organise meetings," Mr Uluinayau said.

He said domestic consumers in Lautoka and Nadi had been advised to store at least 200 litres of water for drinking and cooking purposes.

According to WAF, areas affected will include the whole of Nadi and parts of Lautoka, excluding the Lautoka central business district and some outer boundaries supplied through the Buabua and Saru water treatment plants.

WAF said to ensure there was minimal interruption in the major services such as hospitals, airport, schools and hotels, 100 water trucks would be deployed to cart water.

Mr Uluilnayau said WAF was committed in ensuring that clean water was provided.

"There are no two ways about getting the leaking valve at the Nagado water treatment plant repaired. It is of great importance for this repair to take place in order for WAF to continue to supply clean drinking water to its customers."
