Family counts lucky stars after fire incident

AN early morning fire partially destroyed a two-bedroom flat at Vunivalu Rd in Suva yesterday morning.

When a team from this newspaper visited the house, owner Tawa Lanyon was seen with her family members cleaning up the debris left by the fire.

Ms Lanyon said she and her family members were lucky that the fire didn't spread to the other flats and that no one was injured in the ordeal.

"We live in the middle flat and the flat which caught fire is the top one above us. The tenant is away in Kiribati so my two nephews were sleeping on top when the fire started," Ms Lanyon said.

"The neighbours started yelling this morning when they saw smoke. This is when my nephews woke up and tried to stop the fire from spreading."

She said that was when they made their way to the top.

"We were so caught up that we forgot to call the National Fire Authority (NFA). Our neighbours were the ones who alerted the NFA."

Ms Lanyon said they could not save the belongings in the flat and the cost of the damage was still unknown.

"I haven't informed the tenant about the fire yet. Most of the beddings and furniture are damaged. We are lucky the firefighters manage to stop the fire from spreading and their response time was also fast," she said.

Ms Lanyon said she was still trying to come to terms as to how the fire started and how she would be able to repair the flat, because the house was not insured.

NFA chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said NFA received a call at 8.04am to attend to the fire and the team managed to contain the fire in the top flat, and stopped it from spreading to the second and ground floor of the three-storey residential structure.

NFA is carrying out investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
